Berkin Elvan (14) left home to buy a loaf of bread on 16 June 2013, when he was shot in the head by the riot police with a tear gas canister. After fighting in coma for 269 days, he passed away this morning, weighing only 16 kilograms.
After months of silence and indifference from government officials, President Abdullah Gül gave the family a call yesterday, asking if they need anything. The family requested that the riot police stop attacking their supporters at the hospital. The President told them he would call the governor and ask for restraint, yet the attacks still continue. The crowd in front of the hospital was once again gassed by the riot police today, and several of them have been wounded. A fresh wave of protests are now underway around the country.
